  1. Excellent work, Misty! All of this was sorely ndeeed in FITS. Can’t wait to test the new OpenFITS with improved AV support.I agree with Dave that the key to understanding AV files is to understand the encoding of the underlying tracks, and thus, the need to use tools like ffprobe, mediainfo, and exiftool that do characterize at the track level, is critical. However, I think there is value in being able to run a single tool across a mixed collection, and potentially run a second tool for deeper file characterization of files determined to be AV. For organizations that are not primarily AV, and are using something like FITS already, it is a lot better than what they had before for AV files, which, as you point out, were unidentified. Also, just wanted to note that in some recent tests I was doing comparing the output of mediainfo to exiftool on the same sample set of files, I found the latter to be woefully inconsistent. Anyone got a place to post up samples like that for discussion?

  2. Considering if no one really has time to maiatnin a public OpenFITS, why not utilize the underlying utilities directly (particulary for audiovisual material)? Exiftool is an active and expanding project and projects that have been outside of FITS’ consideration such as ffprobe and mediainfo have been even more active. For audiovisual analysis it seems that the management of technical metadata for file formats and tracks are both significant since the obsolescence and technical dependencies of containers and codecs are often separate issues. FITS seems to condense the concepts of containers and codecs into a single concept while exiftool, mediainfo, ffprobe, qt_info, and others maiatnin their distinction.I’m not meaning to be dismissive of FITS for audiovisual preservation work but within AV archives I consider that utilities and supporting communities for projects like ffprobe may bring us closer to our goals.

  3. The underlying prebolm with FITS is that it’s intended primarily for use for Harvard’s own ingests, and making it available to the public or getting input from outside is strictly an afterthought. Maybe the best strategy would be to create a permanent OpenFITS fork and make it more broadly useful, whether Randy Stern likes it or not. This needs someone to take long-term responsibility for it, though. I’m currently too busy figuring out how to make a living to take it on. Are you interested?

  4. Nicely done Misty. You rock! I agree that including a cfniog option to use local tools will be the next big win. I also agree with Gary that continuing to maintain the OpenFITS fork might be the best way forward. Unfortunately we (artefactual) don’t have the time for this. This sounds like a good candidate project to be taken under the OPF umbrella. It would still need a dedicated maintainer (e.g. someone with a name starting with M?)

  5. The approach shloud be similar for “most” jquery scripts, the important part is using a no-conflict wrapper to ensure the $ var is available to the script.. more here: and here: Jan 29 ’11 at 13:04

Adiantum Pedatum

First short for “Praepostere” mini-series, Adiantum Pedatum is based on botany books illustrations and pictures – a fantastic plant that unfolds in different layers and reveals something beyond the ordinary.

Developed for KM•M•MM, a design event which took place in São Paulo, in 2008, in partnership with Animatório.
